What this site does not do

It sets no cookies. It stores nothing in the browser — neitherlocalStorage nor sessionStorage. It embeds no analytics or statistics services, no ad networks, no social media buttons. The fonts it uses sit on the same server and are not fetched from third parties. Simply opening a page creates no connection to any other provider.

Server logs

Each file request is logged by the web server as a technical necessity: IP address, timestamp, requested address, volume transferred, status code, referring page and browser identification. These logs serve operation and the defence against attacks. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR — the legitimate interest in a functioning and secure service. The data is not combined with other sources, and usage behaviour is not analysed.

Hosting

The servers for this site are located in Germany. The hosting is operated by PawnHoster LLC, a company based in the United States, which processes the server logs on our behalf (Art. 28 GDPR). Per their own privacy policy, data may also be accessed from the United States; for that transfer they rely on the European Commission's standard contractual clauses.

On retention: the live logs are processed every 24 hours and discarded in the process. Before that, the system keeps an archive copy, and those archives are deleted at the end of the following month. Retention is therefore at most about two months.

The superspl.at 3D viewer

The three-dimensional captures do not sit on this server but withsuperspl.at. They are shown in an embedded frame — but onlyafter the start button on an object page has been clicked. Until then all you see is a still image served from this server, and no request goes to superspl.at.

The click establishes the connection. At that point superspl.at necessarily receives the IP address and the usual connection data, and may set cookies of its own. The legal basis is consent under Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR, given by actively starting the viewer. Anyone who does not start it transmits nothing there.

We have no influence over how superspl.at processes data. The service publishes neither provider identification nor a privacy policy of its own on its home page, so no link to one can be given here; a connection to the PlayCanvas project is apparent. Transfer to countries outside the EU cannot be ruled out.

External links

The chronicles cite sources, among them Wikipedia. These are ordinary links: a connection to the provider in question is made only by clicking them. No content is preloaded from there.

A short question about usability

After a while, object pages may show a short question about whether and why you started the 3D model. That question sits in this page itself. Reading it, dismissing it or ignoring it transmits nothing to third parties — not even the fact that it appeared is counted.

Only the "Answer" button opens a survey with Koji in a new tab (Koji Research Inc., Amsterdam;Koji's privacy policy). From that click onwards, Koji's terms apply. On its interview page the service uses Google Analytics and a tracking pixel — measured here — over which this site has no influence.

Where the answers go is set out in Koji'spublic sub-processor register. They are stored in the European Union (database in Paris), and the application and server logs likewise run in the EU. During the conversation, however, the transcripts are processed by a Google language model, and for voice interviews additionally by ElevenLabs; both operate globally, and the transfer is covered by standard contractual clauses. Per that register, neither trains on customer data. Koji publishes no retention period for the answers; we have asked, and it will be added here once known.

The legal basis is consent under Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR, given by actively clicking. The survey is anonymous; it does not ask for name, email address, place of residence or age. Anyone who does not click transmits nothing.

Contact by email

Writing to us transmits your sender address and the content of your message. This is used solely to deal with your enquiry, on the basis of Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, and is deleted once no longer needed. This site has no contact form.

Rights of data subjects

You have the right of access (Art. 15 GDPR), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction of processing (Art. 18), data portability (Art. 20) and the right to object (Art. 21). Consent once given may be withdrawn at any time with effect for the future. Independently of this, you may lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority (Art. 77 GDPR) — the one at your residence or at the controller's seat.

Open data

A machine-readable list of the objects is available at/objects.json. It contains only details of structures and places, no personal data.
